Reporting to Beth Israel Lahey Health’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will provide direct leadership in the system integration and alignment efforts across the healthcare enterprise, enhancing the success and effectiveness of BILH’s strategic planning. The CSO will balance the short-term and long-term needs of the health system. This leader will drive strategic excellence while supporting the organization to deliver on its transformative vision of “extraordinary care closer to you,” positioning BILH to provide world-leading academic medical care in the community, in the home, and through digital platforms. The CSO will identify opportunities for accretive growth and partnerships that create differentiated, industry-leading centers of excellence within the competitive Boston market.

The CSO will lead in the development and implementation of system-wide initiatives to grow and BILH as an integrated academic health system, consistent with its long-range strategic plan. These initiatives include innovative business models and programs, partnerships, new market entry, and other initiatives to enhance the growth of all lines of business across the health system and enhance access to care – spanning tertiary and quaternary care, primary care, ambulatory services, community-based acute care, behavioral health, population health management, ancillary services, and the academic mission.

The CSO will provide thought leadership on key trends in the healthcare environment, actively manage, and drive BILH’s progress in achieving its long-term strategic objectives, working closely with the BILH executive team, hospital and clinical unit leaders, leaders, and other key stakeholders across the system. This leader provides oversight of key integration and transformation initiatives, driving clinical and operational efficiencies, ensuring achievement of key business objectives. Additionally, the CSO often plays a key role in shaping the organization’s competitive positioning, partnerships and overall direction in responses to changes in the healthcare landscape.

With demonstrated experience leading Marketing and Communications strategy, the CSO will ensure alignment with the system’s strategic plan, purpose statement and WE CARE Values.

Job Description:

Develop and Implement a System Wide Strategic Plan:

  • Advances, leads, and manages all components of BILH's long-range system strategic plan. Strategic Planning will be provided across each market segment and across each functional area in the organization.

  • Effectively translates short-term and long-term strategies into actionable and quantitative plans for hospitals and business units.

  • Evaluates and executes all approved strategic initiatives and partnerships, including transactions.

  • Leading a unified Marketing and Communications strategy for the system, ensuring the execution of strategy to enhance Communications for BILH.

Strengthen BILH’s Market Presence:

  • Identifies and evaluates new strategic relationships and business models - spanning hospitals / health systems, physician groups, payors, innovative technology partners, and new business lines - to support growth and business development within and beyond the BILH service area.

  • Continually brings national best practices and innovative business models, both within and outside of health care, and incorporates best practices into the strategic planning and new business structure.

  • Monitors and communicates market and environmental trends that inform strategy development.

Collaborate with and Influence System Leaders:

  • Develops and drives the organization’s growth strategy. Works collaboratively with system leadership, divisional presidents and hospital and clinical unit presidents to identify, assess, and implement growth strategies consistent with the long-range strategic plan.

  • Actively engages BILH system leadership, hospital and clinical unit leadership to ensure ongoing alignment with core strategic priorities and initiatives.

  • Oversees the Integration Management Office (IMO) providing consultative services to BILH’s system leaders, designing and implementing key integration and transformation initiatives – ensuring that BILH realizes its vision to create a transformative health system that makes a difference in the lives of our patients, families and communities.

Lead Strategic and Operational Excellence:

  • Oversees a talented team of strategic planning and business development professionals.

  • Reports on success metrics, oversees process to prioritize key initiatives, tracks and communicates progress of BILH performance against its long-range strategic plan.

  • Oversees quantitative and qualitative analysis to support core strategic priorities, in conjunction with BILH Finance.

Reporting Structure and Key Relationships:

The Chief Strategy Officer reports to the Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Beth Israel Lahey Health and serves as a vital strategic partner to the Executive Leadership Team.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator who can command respect and enthusiasm from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, grounded in an established track record of collaborating effectively with a dynamic and changing clinical workforce, as well as executive and senior leadership, to operationalize strategic initiatives and synchronized marketing and communications. This individual will be dedicated not only to improving quality but also enabling BILH to be well positioned to effectively create and champion an aspiring future vision for a best-in-class, high reliability, coordinated system of care.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, healthcare management, public health, or other discipline related to the duties of the position is preferred.

  • At least ten years of progressive leadership experience with a successful track record in management of complex change initiatives in a healthcare environment is required.

Strategic Vision

  • Strong knowledge of Healthcare markets, competitors, industry trends and products methods with a focus on high-priority growth markets

  • Experience in M&A, executing strategy initiatives, creating business cases, initiative planning and project management

  • Lead efforts to identify and oversee the development, implementation, and sustainment of strategies to grow and differentiate BILH as an academic healthcare system.
